Callaway Golf is known for many things but it’s the Big Bertha brand upon which the entire company was founded, and almost two decades later, the name is as powerful and evocative as ever.

The blood red Diablo irons are the latest off-shoot of the Big Bertha brand and and are complimented by Diablo driver, fairways metals and hybrids to Diablo bags, gloves and even balls.
The Diablo driver has already proved itself to be the powerful sibling Callaway hoped it would be when it launched in Munich in October – long, loud and very aggressive – though it makes the inclusion of a premium, forged iron in the range somewhat puzzling.
While the rest of the Diablo line seems designed to appeal to the mid-range player looking for game-improvement clubs in a more exciting package, the Diablo irons are aimed squarely at the better player – not exactly the ethos that made the Big Bertha brand the champion of the game-improver.
According to Callaway, these irons have been designed for player seeking a traditionally styled club with ‘enhanced playability and performance’. Quite where they fit into a line-up of irons that already includes excellent single-figure player options such as the X-Forged or the X-22 Tour is a a mystery.

Big Bertha Diablo irons appear to be a combination of the two – no bad thing but why?
The marketing strategy and politics aside, there’s little doubting the quality of these clubs.
Everything about the Diablo irons screams class, although with a price-tag that is getting up towards four-figures, you’d expect nothing less. Every iron in the set is very sleek and could certainly lay claim to being one of the best looking Callaway irons ever produced. But it is the performance-controlling elements that will really appeal to the better player.
With a narrow sole, shorter blade, thinner topline and minimal offset, the Diablo ticks all of the boxes for those in search of feel and workability.
The irons are forged from 1020 carbon steel but in order to improve the trajectory and distance, Callaway has included a strong and light 455 Carpenter Steel face that allows weight to be moved to the perimeter.
It might be a better-player’s club but who couldn’t use a little help keeping it more stable at impact? It certainly works. At impact the clubs feel incredibly solid and the ball really flies off the face with plenty of zip.
These are massively powerful irons, with a combination of better ball speed and stronger lofts producing some serious distance. Thankfully, these extra yards aren’t at the expense of control. They might be long but they’re not wild.
And that is the conundrum of the Diablo irons. Callaway’s ‘Unleash Hell’ message might work with a driver but when it comes to a classy set of forged irons, it seems inappropriate. The proof however, is in the hitting and Diablo and the better player seems like a match made in heaven rather than hell.

Personally I think the shape of these irons is very nice, looking at them from address is nice, as is the size of the topline. Its a little bit big, but not so much that it is an eyesore.The weight is positioned nicely around the perimeter of the club too. All in all I would say it is a nice set of cavity backs.
It is a super game improvement iron to me. Better looking to me than a Cobra S2 or Burner Superlaunch, and as the Fusion Wide Sole was a popular iron with a lot of technology that’s helped many people play better golf.
The irons look sweet… Not too different than the X Forged, but the cavity is different. Looks good.
That is a very beautiful club. I am sure that this supermodel of a club won’t just stand there and look pretty, I bet it would cook for you too… cook the ball right down the middle.
Nice lines, sleek looking like a vette and hotter than a two dollar pistol. Seriously I think the entire new line of razr irons will make a solid impression for all skill levels this coming season!

TaylorMade Burner irons were designed with greater forgiveness and longer distances in mind. A cool fact about these clubs, the long, middle and short-irons were all designed separate and independent of one another by TaylorMade’s iron-creation team.

With greater forgiveness and longer distance in mind, they thinned the Taylormade Mens Burner Irons club face down as much as possible to make it more flexible and faster for a higher COR.
In case you were wondering, COR stands for the “coefficient of restitution” and is calculated by:
COR = ball speed after contact – club speed after contact ÷ club speed before contact
Or in simple english, how efficiently a ball bounces off the club face. A higher COR results in longer shots.
The TaylorMade Burner 09 Irons feature Inverted Cone Technology. This technology was originally developed to expand the COR zone of TaylorMade drivers. The Inverted Cone was drilled directly in the back side of the club face resulting in drastic variations of face thickness. The end result of the Inverted Cone was more distance resulting from mishits.
The club head is increased in sized by expanding the perimeter which increases the moment-of-inertia to a higher level than any previous TaylorMade iron. A higher MOI gives the club head much more resistance against rotating when it makes contact with the golf ball… or ground.
The offset of the sole was increased a bit in order to make it easier to square the club face during impact. Also, the width of the sole was greatly increased to lower the center of gravity of the club face.
A new technology, labeled Super Fast Technology was invented and incorporated into the new TaylorMade Burner 2009 Irons. Super Fast Technology incorporates a higher coefficient of restitution(COR), higher moment-of-inertia(MOI), and progressive(longer, lighter) shaft-length, progressive(lighter) grips, and larger, more forgiving club faces. Combine all this and the end result is greater ball speed and forgiveness as you progress through the round.
